When it comes to replacing old metal fillings, many patients have concernsโespecially about the safety of removing mercury-containing amalgam. At Gateway Oral Health Center in St. George, Utah, Drs. Bryce Eagar, Matthew Geddes, Andy Mohlman, and their team take a holistic and meticulous approach to this delicate procedure. If you’re searching for a dentist to remove mercury fillings in St. George, Utah, here are five common questions patients have about the safety and benefits of holistic mercury removal.
Dental amalgam contains about 50 percent mercury, a heavy metal that can release vapor over timeโespecially when chewing or grinding teeth. While opinions vary in mainstream dentistry, holistic dentists like Drs. Eagar, Geddes, Mohlman, and the team take a more cautious stance, recognizing that mercury exposure may contribute to systemic health issues in sensitive individuals. Replacing these fillings with biocompatible alternatives is often part of a broader commitment to supporting long-term wellness.
We follow strict safety protocols aligned with SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) guidelines. This includes using specialized equipment such as high-volume suction, rubber dams, air filtration systems, and oxygen masks to protect both patients and the dental team. These measures are designed to contain mercury vapor and particles during the removal process, ensuring a safer experience for everyone involved.
Once your mercury fillings are removed, we replace them with tooth-colored composite resins. These are biocompatible materials that are durable and free from harmful metals. The composite resins not only blend naturally with your teeth but are also chosen based on your individual sensitivities and health needs. The goal is to restore your smile with safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing results.
Mercury filling removal is generally no more uncomfortable than any other dental procedure. Our team uses precise, minimally invasive techniques to remove old fillings while preserving as much of the healthy tooth structure as possible. Local anesthesia ensures your comfort during the appointment, and using advanced tools helps minimize any trauma to the surrounding tissues.
Many patients choose to have their mercury fillings removed as part of a broader effort to reduce their toxic load or address unexplained health symptoms. While scientific studies on this connection are ongoing, holistic dentists often observe improvements in wellness, especially in patients sensitive to metals. Our team works closely with each patient to assess whether mercury removal is the right choice for their individual health goals.
