Most people recognize the importance of proper oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day and flossing at night is a practice everyone should follow, but is that enough? The fact is that regular dental hygiene appointments and checkups can serve several purposes. Visiting your dentist’s office twice a year is essential for oral health.
Dental hygiene appointments are routine dental visits that focus on checking for problematic issues, professional teeth cleanings, and learning more about good oral care.
During this type of appointment, a trained dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth, including the removal of tartar and plaque. They will also polish your teeth to remove stains from the surface and give your teeth a thorough flossing. At this time, the dental hygienist will screen you for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
Most dentists recommend visiting every six months to check for cavities, have teeth cleaned, and screen for problems such as oral cancer. However, depending on their situation, some may need more frequent visits.
Brushing and flossing at home aren’t enough to maintain optimal oral health. This is because plaque forms on the teeth, and this can cause tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by just brushing and flossing your teeth. This has to be done at a dentist’s office. Also important, your dentist or dental hygienist will screen for problems you may be unaware of, such as oral cancer, cavities, and gum disease.
Generally, dental hygiene appointments are painless. You may feel some mild discomfort or pressure when your teeth are being cleaned, especially if you have a lot of tartar buildup or sensitive gums.
Before your appointment, all you need to do is brush your teeth and floss thoroughly. You can also make a list of questions you may have so the hygienist can address your concerns.
After your professional teeth cleaning, your teeth will feel clean and smooth. Occasionally, some patients have gum sensitivity, but if this happens, it will subside after one or two days.
Many dental insurance plans cover routine dental visits, including dental hygiene appointments. However, coverage may vary, so be sure to check with your dental insurance provider to be sure you know what your plan covers.
